A young mother has been jailed for robbing and burgling disabled victims.

Luminata Dumitru, 20, had recently left Romania for the UK with her one-year-old daughter to join her boyfriend and mother-in-law in Aintree, Liverpool.

Liverpool Crown Court heard on Thursday that Dumitru turned to crime to support her family after her relationship broke down.

CCTV footage showed her mugging a deaf man at an ATM in Liverpool city centre and raiding sheltered housing in Knotty Ash.

Dumitru admitted robbery and two counts of burglary.

Andrew McInnes, defending, said Dumitru had been in the country for around three months.

He said she came to the UK with her mother-in-law to join her boyfriend but "that partner is no longer around".

Mr McInnes said:

They effectively came to a position where they had no money for rent or to support themselves. It is as a consequence of that, that this defendant has drifted into crime.

Judge Andrew Menary, QC, described the crimes as "very unpleasant" and "mean".

He said:

They were committed by you as part of a quite deliberate plan to steal what you could from whoever and wherever you could find a victim.

– Judge Andrew Menary, QC

Dumitru sobbed in the dock as Judge Menary sentenced her to three years in a young offenders institution.
