A hospital worker appeared in court accused of placing a plastic bag over an elderly patient's head.
Santosh Bhatta, 31, was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the incident on Ward 11 of Broadgreen Hospital in Liverpool, on July 22 last year.
However he was later charged with the lesser offence of being a care worker who ill-treated or wilfully neglected the victim, 79-year-old Olinda Mansfield.
Bhatta, of Lindale Close in Moreton, Wirral, appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court today where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Miss Mansfield, who it is believed had "no friends or family", has since died, although her death is believed to be unrelated to the July incident.
The case was committed to Liverpool Crown Court, where Bhatta is due to appear next month.
He was released on bail with conditions not to enter Broadgreen Hospital or communicate with any members of staff from Ward 11.
The Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen University Hospitals Trust (RLBUHT), which runs both hospitals, said after the incident there was no ongoing risk to patients.
