Man jailed after using drone to fly contraband into prison

Police in Merseyside say they're welcoming the sentence of a Walton man to five years in prison for attempting to fly a drone containing prohibited items into HMP Liverpool.

29-year-old Anthony Cheeney from Peter Road was sentenced this week at Liverpool Crown Court.

At around 9pm on Thursday, 31 August 2017, officers sighted a drone close to HMP Liverpool on Hornby Road.

The drone was observed crashing nearby and was recovered. Class A and B drugs and mobile phones and sim cards were found attached to the drone which were seized.

Enquiries identified Cheeney and he was arrested and charged with conveying prohibited articles into prison.
