A 34-year-old man was shot dead in Liverpool city centre as he waited for his daughter outside a dance school, police said.
Emergency services were called to Holy Cross Close at about 8pm on Thursday to reports of shots being fired.
On arrival, police discovered the victim who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man's daughter was attending a children's dance class at the nearby Marybone Youth and Community Centre.
Det Chief Supt Mark Kameen of Merseyside Police told ITV Granada Reports: "His daughter was actually at that dance school at that time and has come out and witnessed her father after the attack, we believe.
"This is a young child who now has to deal with that experience possibly for the rest of her life."
The scene has been cordoned off for forensic examination and witnesses from the area are being spoken to.
CCTV in the vicinity of the shooting is also being checked.
Police are particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw a black Ford Fiesta car which was seen close to the scene.
A similar vehicle was later found burnt out in nearby Summer Seat, Vauxhall, at 8.15pm on Thursday.
