A male lion has been killed in a fight with lionesses at Knowsley Safari Park on Merseyside.

Seven-year-old Mojo was found injured by keepers on 12 February after a fight overnight. He later died from internal injuries while recovering from the anaesthetic.

Fights with females in the pride are not uncommon in a mixed set group and a part of the lions' natural behaviour, the zoological park said.

Our expert vet team worked swiftly to give pain relief to Mojo and examined him under anaesthetic, however, he died while recovering which a post mortem revealed was due to injuries not visible on external examination.

Mojo's brother, Scooter was not harmed. The safari park says he has a strong position in the pride and a similar occurrence is unlikely.

He remains the only male in the pride.
