Wirral youth worker Mattea Sykes, 20, has been awarded the Young Women’s Trust’s national ‘Inspiration Award’ at a ceremony held in partnership with ELLE magazine in London for overcoming huge health obstacles to be able to help others.
The charity, which supports young women on low or no pay, was impressed by Mattea’s commitment to helping local young people through her youth work and volunteering.
Mattea also cares for her mum while facing her own chronic health conditions.
At 11, Mattea’s health left her housebound and unable to go to school. Hard work, painful physiotherapy and perseverance mean that Mattea is able to walk again.
This has given me a sense of pride in myself I didn’t think I would ever have and made me reflect on where I have come from to get here and more importantly where I am going in the future.
