The Church of England's appointed a judge to lead an investigation into allegations of historical sexual abuse against a former Bishop of Chester.

It's been revealed 19 people have made allegations against the late Hubert Victor Whitsey. He was Bishop of Chester in the 1970s and 80s and died in 1987.

Many of the people who claim he abused them say they were children at the time

It has been announced that a retired judge, His Hon David Pearl, has been appointed by the Church of England’s National Safeguarding Team as chair of the independent review into the Whitsey case.

Hubert Whitsey, who died in 1987 aged 71, served as Bishop of Chester from 1974 to 1981. Before that he had been Bishop of Hertford and earlier worked as a parish priest in Chorley, South Ribble and Bolton.

After an investigation the police concluded he would have been questioned in relation to ten witness allegations had he been alive today.
