Boris Johnson has come under fire after using a Manx kipper during his speech at last night's Tory hustings.

He claimed that the plastic ice pillow that is shipped with the kippers was "pointless, expensive" and "environmentally damaging" and blamed the EU for this standard.

The EU Commission have responded describing the regulation as a "UK national competence" and something that is "outside the scope of EU legislation".

Meanwhile the Isle of Man Government responded with this statement:

The Isle of Man law is closely based on UK legislation and relevant EU food safety regulations. Where our goods are exported they are required to comply with standards of the destination market"

– Isle of Man Government spokesperson
