The end of the Northern pacer trains

  • Mel Barham has this report:

Pacers in the North West have been running since the 1980s and were only ever intended to have a lifespan of 20 years.

They have been widely-criticised for being outdated and dubbed 'buses-on-rails' but now the pacer trains are ready for retirement and are being scrapped as part of a £500m upgrade.

Northern has promised they all be gone by the end of the year and the first of the fleet made its final journey today from Manchester Victoria to Stalybridge at 32-years-old.
