Teens arrested after disorder at Piccadilly Gardens

Three teenagers have been arrested and a knife seized after scenes of 'violent disorder' in Piccadilly Gardens last night.

A large number of police swooped on the square after reports of a 'large group causing anti-social behaviour.'

Describing the scene, one witness wrote on Twitter:

What’s going on in manchester city centre / Piccadilly area? Police everywhere, everything at standstill.

Another tweeted police:

Are you able to tell us what the large police presence was in city centre and Piccadilly gardens in the past hour?

Police van stopped on tram tracks and up to 8 police vehicles throughout.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said three teenagers were arrested.

A 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and a 15-year-old boy on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.

A knife was later recovered from a bin, police added.

GMP said:

At around 8pm on Friday 20 September, police received a number of reports regarding a large group of people causing anti-social behaviour around Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester.

A number of officers were sent to the scene and three arrests were made.

A 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and a 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon.

They have been released under investigation as enquiries continue.

Officers from Operation Sycamore were in attendance and recovered a bladed article that had been discarded in a bin nearby. This has now been safely disposed of.
