A team in the North West have criticised the benefits system after it was revealed that over half a million people were wrongly denied benefits in the last five years.

Freedom of Information requests have shown that almost 69% of appeals against benefit assessments are won.

This has led to calls to overhaul how benefit assessments are made for people who are disabled or too ill to work.

Charities and advice providers said the figures showed that the government's benefits tests were beset by 'poor decision-making' and 'obvious inaccuracies'.
