Baby orangutan boosts fight against extinction

The baby boy is a critically-endangered Sumatran orangutan.

Chester Zoo is welcoming a rare new arrival - a baby Sumatran orangutan.

He was delivered by mum Subis, a 32 year old, and fathered by Puluh, who's the same age.

Fewer than 14,000 of the animals remain in the wild and Chester is the only zoo in mainland Britain to care for them.

The apes have been pushed to the point of near extinction by the destruction of their natural habitat for illegal logging and the palm oil industry.

The arrival of a new baby in the family of Sumatran orangutans is always cause for celebration. Subis is a great mum and she is being really attentive to her new born. The pair are inseparable as they get to know one another.
