A man is in a serious condition after he was hit by a police car this morning.

Emergency services were called to Church Road, near Spital train station in Wirral, to reports that a man in his 60s had been hit by a police vehicle.

A major police presence is currently on Church Road, which is closed, near the Three Stags pub.

A large cordon was put in place and drivers have been advised to avoid the area and use an alternative route.

Ambulance officials confirmed they were called to the incident and that the man was airlifted to hospital with "serious injuries".

North West Ambulance Service confirmed they were called to an accident in Church Road at 11.22am.

A spokeswoman said two senior clinicians, a rapid response vehicle, land ambulance and air ambulance were all sent to the scene.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm that a police vehicle was involved in an incident with a male pedestrian.

"The incident happened around 11:15 am.”

Police said on their Facebook page: "Please be aware Spital road in the Wirral from the junction of Church Road to St Andrews Road is currently closed due to a road traffic collision, avoid the area and find an alternative route if possible."
