A number of people have been arrested after a stolen car was wrecked after being ploughed into lamppost.

The white Volkswagen Scirocco was left badly damaged in Heywood on Sunday 29 January, by the driver before four occupants quickly fled on foot.

Police later traced the group and arrested them on suspicion of burglary.

They remain in custody to be questioned.

The vehicle has since been recovered and will be examined by forensics officers as part of an ongoing investigation into the matter.

Greater Manchester Police's traffic division shared an image of the aftermath of the crash, showing the extent of the damage caused to the stolen vehicle.

The front bonnet can be seen completely crushed against a lamppost at the roadside.
