Joseph Thompson shooting prompts Mayoral visit

Joseph Thompson, who was shot dead in Norris Green, Liverpool

Joseph Thompson was shot dead on Ravensthorpe Street in Norris Green in the early hours of Thursday, June 14.

Since then armed police have patrolled the streets in the area to try to reassure people who live there.

It is thought Mr Thompson's murder may have been linked to a gang feud.

Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson is due to meet police and community leaders in Norris Green today to see how gun crime is being tackled.

He and Merseyside police are also encouraging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.

Merseyside police vows to crackdown on gun crime

"I want to make it very clear that we are not prepared to tolerate these incidents and we will be taking a strong and robust approach against those suspected of being involved.

"We would like to reassure the local community that this was a targeted attack and that incidents of this nature are still rare. We are not prepared to allow the close work we have developed with the community to be disrupted.

"I want to urge those with information to make contact with us on 0151 777 8676 immediately so that we can bring the offenders to justice and I promise you that we will act on all information given to us in our relentless pursuit of those involved.

"We can't always solve crime on our own - sometimes we need to be pointed in the right direction by local people. If you want to report a crime, but you do not want to be identified to the police, call Crimestoppers.

"Their staff will record your information and pass it on to the police so that it can be used to solve the crime. Your call will not be traced, and you won't have to testify in court or give a full statement, no matter how useful the information turns out to be.

"Crimestoppers want to know what you know not who you are and you can call them at any time on 0800 555 111.

"I would also like to thank the law-abiding people in Norris Green for their continued patience and understanding whilst this police activity is taking place."

Liverpool Mayor says he supports putting armed police on streets after fatal shooting

"The recent fatal shooting appalled the entire community of Norris Green who were shocked at the horrific and senseless violence that took place on their doorstep.

"The vast majority of local people are decent, law abiding citizens and righty feel aggrieved that the reputation of their neighbourhood is being unfairly tarnished.

"I fully understand and support the police's decision to provide reassurance through the deployment of armed patrols.

"During my visit I am keen to find out more about the concerns of local residents and also reassure them that we are working hard with the police and other agencies to tackle this issue.

"I would urge anyone who knows anything about guns or gangs to get in contact with Merseyside Police or Crimestoppers and pass on any piece of information - large or small - that they think may be significant."
