Tributes to Preston and Blackburn keeper Fred Else

Tributes have been paid to former Preston and Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Fred Else, who has died aged 82.

Else made over 230 appearances for Preston during the 1950s, playing alongside Sir Tom Finney. He later went on to play for Blackburn Rovers for five seasons.

He died today, in Barrow, after some months of illness.

In a statement on their website, Preston North End said:

"Fred, a real gentleman, on and off the pitch, was regarded by many as the best uncapped goalkeeper of his era...

"Fred will be sorely missed by his many friends, family and former colleagues.

Our sincere condolences go out to his widow, Marjorie and his family."
