Police in Manchester are searching for a thief who threatened and assaulted an elderly woman before stealing her handbag.

The 68-year-old was returning home from Droylsden town centre when she was dragged to the floor as a man grabbed her bag from behind and attempted to pull it from her grasp. He then went to punch her in the face, causing her to flinch and release her grip on the bag.

The incident happened on Lock Keepers Court off Manchester Road at around 1pm on Monday, June 13.

The man fled up High Bank Road with the woman's groceries and £25 in cash.

He is described as white, 20-22-years-old, slim build and wearing a dark navy quilted rain coat, black jeans and black trainers.

This poor woman fought bravely to prevent this low-life from stealing her bag, but understandably let go when threatened with physical harm.

To wrestle an elderly lady to the floor and use intimidation to steal a bag containing just some groceries and £25 in cash demonstrates the desperation of this offender.

He is likely to strike again, making it all the more important that we identify this man as soon as possible.

If you were in the area of Lock Keepers Court or the canal tow path near to the Water Adventure Centre in Droylsden at the time of the robbery and think you saw anything which may assist the investigation, please do not hesitate to contact us.
