A bomb disposal unit has been sent to an area in West Kirby following an incident this afternoon.

Police were called to Victoria Road after a 51-year-old man allegedly threatened another man with a handgun following a brief, verbal dispute.

Officers arrested the man on suspicion of possessing a firearm outside an address on Leigh Road. His car was searched, during which a suspected air weapon was seized.

Police say they became concerned about "a number of other items in his car" and as a result, a cordon was put in place as a precaution whilst specialist search officers were called.

A bomb-disposal unit was also called to the scene as a precautionary measure.

The safety cordon has led to a number of roads in the area being closed and motorists are advised to find an alternative route through West Kirby. Residents have been advised to stay indoors.
