Liverpool will honour a World War One hero from Wirral later, a hundred years after he was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery.

Sergeant Cyril Edward Gourley will be commemorated with the unveiling of a plaque at his graveside and a memorial paving stone at Liverpool parish church.

The North West hero was presented with the Victoria Cross for his actions during the Battle of Cambrai, where despite being overrun and being forced off the position, Sgt Gourley is said to have regularly led artillerymen back to the gun to get it back into action.
