Plans to bring Golf's Ryder Cup to Bolton could be thrown off course after thousands of residents lobbied the government to veto the development

Councillors approved plans by Peel Group to build a golf course and a thousand executive homes, after planners said the benefits of hosting the world's third largest sporting event outweighed the harm to the greenbelt.

But conservationists have described the Ryder Cup bid as 'fantasy' and opponents fear the ancient woodland and local farming would be lost.
