Transport bosses today defended a planned hike in the London Congestion Charge. The daily toll for driving in Central London goes up from £10 to £11.50 next month.
Motorists who opt for the credit card Auto Pay system will get a £1 discount. London mayor Boris Johnson approved the increase following a period of public consultation earlier this year.
A spokesman said the rise was in line with inflation and was the first since 2011. The congestion charge raises more than half a million pounds a day and affects an estimated 70,000 motorists.
Any profit has to be spent on transport improvements like cycling schemes.
