Jeweller armed with baseball bat chases off axe-wielding gang who stole £50,000 of watches

This is the moment a jeweller swings a baseball bat at two robbers who were raiding his store armed with an axe.

Mark Guess tried to defend his jewellers from the masked scooter gang that plundered up to £50,000 of watches and a £15,000 diamond ring.

The father-of-two bided his time until the armed pair left his store and struck one of them with his bat as they fled on their scooter, on Monday.

Mark said he saw red and was trying to protect his business, in Twickenham, West London.

They pulled up on their moped and one of them got off and kicked down the door - that really made me jump.

Then one of them produced an axe and started smashing the cabinet window. We hit the panic buttons and me and my manager picked up our baseball bats.

I was a bit stupid but I went for them. It is my business that I have worked so hard for. I just thought 'it's my shop and you are robbing me'.

I'm a family man, and I shouldn't have done what I did. I tell my staff not to react and there I was cracking one of them in the back.

The raiders kicked down the door at around 10.45am and the repeatedly smashed the front window with an axe before taking on a cabinet.

The armed robber filled his pockets with Rolexes, Cartiers and a diamond solitaire ring, before fleeing on the back of his partner's scooter.

I've been robbed before but never with an axe. It's a strange thing. It thought because it's not a gun that's okay. But he could've done anything, he could've thrown it at me so I waited until I saw the right moment.

I don't know if I'm brave or stupid.

He said his wife of nine years, Gosia, 36, who he has a four-year-old girl and two-year-old boy with, wasn't best pleased with him.He added:

We won't go there. She was more upset. But I'm not that sort of person. Something just snapped. It's wrong that people do stuff like that.

Scotland Yard confirmed that detectives from the Flying Squad are investigating the smash and grab.No arrests have been made and enquiries continue.
