The Business Secretary was defending a majority of more than 12,000 but was beaten by Conservative candidate Tania Mathias.

Climate Secretary Ed Davey lost Kingston & Surbiton, veteran MP Simon Hughes was ousted in Bermondsey & Old Southwark, Home Office minister Lynne Featherstone was defeated in Hornsey & Wood Green and former minister Paul Burstow lost Sutton & Cheam.

Labour also took Brent Central with a huge majority after Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather decided to stand down.

The Liberal Democrat massacre leaves Tom Brake as the party's sole MP in London, representing Carshalton & Wallington.

The fact is we were hit by a very well organised national campaign based on people's fears of a Labour government and the Scottish Nationalists. Unfortunately this has been a terrible night for our party all over but I'm absolutely sure we are going to bounce back.'
