The London Mayor Boris Johnson made a speech this morning calling for Government support for the Crossrail 2 project.

The underground railway is planned to link Wimbledon to Tottenham Hale and New Southgate in North London. With the capital's population increasing, the Mayor says the scheme will relieve the pressure on the existing transport network. Crossrail 2 is expected to add another 10% to London's rail capacity.

The Mayor said he is setting up a Crossrail 2 Growth Commission which will explain how London will benefit economically from the scheme. And he urged the Government to ignore critics who say the £25bn project is too expensive.
