A 13-year-old girl has been injured after a gun was fired at the car she was in.

The injured teenager was rushed into Bethnal Green police station by a 23-year-old man after the incident on Wednesday evening.

The man told officers that a gun had been fired at his vehicle - prompting armed police to be deployed and the closure of several roads.

The police station was also closed while the girl received treatment.

The victim remains in hospital where her condition is not thought to be serious.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson told ITV News that the girl and man who took the girl to the police station were "known to each other", but would not comment on the relationship.

No one has been arrested in connection with the incident.

One witness told the Evening Standard that police officers were crowding around a grey Mitsubishi which had its "sides dented in" and a "big pool of dark liquid" under it.

The car was removed from the scene hours later.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said:

Detectives are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information following the discharge of a firearm in Tower Hamlets.
