Islamophobic Twitter messages in the wake of Sadiq Khan’s election as London mayor have been rejected for messages of unity.

The #Londonhasfallen hashtag - inspired by a film of the same name - began trending soon after Mr Khan, the city’s first Muslim mayor, was announced the winner at City Hall.

It was used by some for abusive messages that criticised the new mayor for his race and religion.

But it was not long before the hashtag was hijacked, with people posting messages of support, and even humour.
