London votes overwhelmingly to remain in the EU despite the national vote to leave

London today voted by an overwhelming majority to stay in the EU - putting the capital out of step with much of the country.

An estimated 2.1m Londoners took part in the historic ballot - a 70% turnout.

Counting took place overnight in 32 London boroughs and the City of London.

Five boroughs bucked the London trend and voted to leave - Barking & Dagenham, Bexley, Havering, Hillingdon and Sutton.

But the Remain vote in London had a comfortable majority of almost 750,000 as the final ballot papers were counted.
