More than 70 firefighters battled for an hour to put out a fire in a block of flats in south London on Wednesday evening.

It started at around 6:30pm in Hicken Road in Brixton.

Flames could been seen engulfing one section of the building and the smoke could been seen for miles around.

Ambulances were sent to the scene but Station Manager Jason Jones said there have not been any reports of injuries.

Residents said the cause of the fire was a motorbike that a man living in the block had taken up to his second floor flat over fears it could be stolen, the Evening Standard reported.
