CCTV images captured the moment Sanchez Edwards, 28, dragged the elderly woman along the pavement in broad daylight.

He pounced as his victim was posting a letter in Hoxton in June last year. At first, the recently widowed pensioner refused to let go of her handbag but Edwards, who was wearing a hood, eventually wrenched it from her.

He escaped with a £50 Virgin mobile phone, her Freedom Pass, documents and £100 in cash.

Edwards, a paranoid schizophrenic, had absconded from the John Howard medium secure psychiatric unit two months before he carried out the attack and was only arrested in July, weeks after the mugging.

He'll be sentenced today at Wood Green Crown Court.
