A major train route into London has been closed until the weekend after 400 tonnes of soil and trees slid onto the track.

The landslide affects hundreds of Southeastern commuters who use the Bexleyheath line between Dartford and Blackheath via Eltham, Welling and Bexleyheath.

The line is taking longer than usual to clear because of what Network Rail describes as 'unusual conditions'.

These types of ground conditions are quite unusual, usually the ground here is made of London clay or chalk and is quite uniform.

Barnehurst has been a problematic site for us with some history.

There have been slips in different locations in February 2010 & 2014 and January 2016.

Work to clear the track was initially delayed because the landslip kept moving.

We would need both lines closed to carry out the work safely and quickly, but would be able to have the work complete by the weekend.

We would then need to do some more work to back-fill behind the wall, but we could do this later without impacting services.
