CCTV footage has emerged of 31-year-old John Murphy walking up to Mr Corbyn and slamming the egg into his head as he spoke to constituents at a mosque in Islington earlier this year.

Murphy was today jailed for 28 days for the assault following a hearing at Westminster Magistrates Court.

Mr Corbyn said he was “shocked and surprised” by the attack.

The CPS said the jail sentence will send a strong message that violence to MPs will not be tolerated.

This was an unprovoked attack on a politician carrying out official duties.

Assaults on public servants affect the very fabric of our democratic society and the CPS will continue to ensure that we support all victims of crime.

This case clearly sends out a message that such behaviour will not be tolerated and perpetrators will correctly be brought before the courts.
