London Mayor Sadiq Khan today accused ministers of betraying the promise of the 2012 Olympics by failing to invest in youth sport.
Mr Khan was hosting a new City Hall ‘steering group’ set up to explore how sport can help stem the rising tide in knife crime.
The organisers of London 2012 adopted ‘Inspire a Generation’ as the key slogan of the games.
Mr Khan was challenged by a 12-year-old boy, AJ Etumnu, to explain what he was doing about youth violence.
The mayor said City Hall’s strategy included spending £1.1m on new sports projects.
