Mr Khan was hosting a new City Hall ‘steering group’ set up to explore how sport can help stem the rising tide in knife crime.

The organisers of London 2012 adopted ‘Inspire a Generation’ as the key slogan of the games.

We should have followed that up with investment in youth services, youth clubs, playing fields, in open spaces. Not only have we betrayed the promise of the Olympics, we’ve let down a generation.

– SADIQ KHAN, Mayor of London

Mr Khan was challenged by a 12-year-old boy, AJ Etumnu, to explain what he was doing about youth violence.

The mayor said City Hall’s strategy included spending £1.1m on new sports projects.
