Havering headteacher heads to Australia to recruit new teachers

A headteacher from Havering is heading to Australia to recruit teachers because the borough's schools can't find enough in the UK.

The population of the east London borough has increased rapidly over the last decade.

So one of the principals is going to Australia next month to encourage teachers to apply for jobs.

Stuart McLaughlin, Principal of Bower Park Academy in Romford, needs English, maths and science teachers most.

Australia has a surplus of teachers and successful candidates will be asked to live with local families to help them to integrate into school and community life.

In some subjects in particular it's really difficult to recruit in this part of London.

What Australia has got is a surplus of teachers so it's an ideal place to go and find really good candidates to fill some of the vacancies in the Havering schools.

Our schools have reported that it's getting harder to attract the right candidates, so earlier this year we also launched a campaign to promote Havering as a great place to live and work.

It has the benefit of being in close proximity to London, whilst also having award winning parks and great cultural facilities. It is also one of the more affordable places to live in Outer London.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming a new team of strong candidates to enrich our growing teacher cohort.
