Sadiq Khan scraps Tube fare freeze in Mayoral election pledge to only freeze bus fares

Sadiq Khan has announced that if re-elected as Mayor of London, he’ll freeze bus fares for the next four years and ensure any other TfL fare rises are lower than the rate of inflation.

Mr Khan admitted that he would be unable to continue with the four-year partial fares freeze but said he would limit future increases to no more than the “cost of living”. The mayoral candidate also said there would be no increase in bus fares.

Bus fares are currently £1.50 per journey until 2025. The “hopper” fare — which allows multiple bus and tram journeys within an hour for no extra charge — would also remain unchanged.

The delay in opening Crossrail by two-and-a-half years will cost TfL £1.35 billion in lost income. The new transport line is now not due to open until summer 2021.
