Coronavirus deaths in London rise to 729 - peak could be four weeks away

London's coronavirus death toll has risen to 729, according to London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Speaking to ITV News Mr Khan also warned the peak of the virus may be another four weeks away.

"When we get to the peak that's the worst part of the disease with the largest number of deaths," Mr Khan added.

London's hospitals are also facing huge demand for intensive care beds with the new NHS Nightingale at London's ExCel Centre supplying about half the amount needed.

We have across London about 800 intensive care beds. We need over the next few weeks about 8,000.

The Nightingale gives us about half the capacity and the other half will come from hospitals reconfiguring facilities to provide the additional intensive care facilities we need.

It is breathtaking in its impressiveness but extremely scary in the sheer scale of the challenge we're facing.

Sadiq Khan said the NHS Nightingale would not be open to walk-in patients and would only accept admissions from the London Ambulance Service.
