Members of the public have taken to Twitter to express their sympathy to the family of a runner who died after taking part in the London Marathon.
The 42-year-old collapsed at the finish line and later died in hospital.
The organisers of the London Marathon have expressed their sadness at the death of a competitor following yesterday's event.
A statement from the Virgin Money London Marathon said:
A 42-year-old man has died after collapsing at the finish of the London Marathon, organisers have confirmed.
The man, who has not yet been identified, received medical attention immediately after the race but was later pronounced dead at hospital.
It is the first death in the event since 2012 when 30-year-old Claire Squires died after suffering from cardiac failure.
An estimated 36,000 people took part in the 34th London Marathon yesterday.
