The organisers of the London Marathon have expressed their sadness at the death of a competitor following yesterday's event.

A statement from the Virgin Money London Marathon said:

It is with regret that we have learnt of the death of a competitor in the Virgin Money London Marathon.

A 42-year-old man collapsed after the finish line and although immediate medical attention was provided to the casualty, the fatality was confirmed on his arrival at hospital.

The organisers of the Virgin Money London Marathon would like to express their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

A 42-year-old man has died after collapsing at the finish of the London Marathon, organisers have confirmed.

The man, who has not yet been identified, received medical attention immediately after the race but was later pronounced dead at hospital.

It is the first death in the event since 2012 when 30-year-old Claire Squires died after suffering from cardiac failure.

An estimated 36,000 people took part in the 34th London Marathon yesterday.
