House boat sinks in Ash Island blaze
One boat sunk and another was gutted by fire after a blaze brokeout early this morning. The fire started onone boat and spread to the next, which was so badly burnt it eventuallysank.
It is thought the boats were barges used as house boats. They were moored off Ash Island near Hampton Court Road in East Molesey.
Colin McSweeney, of London Fire Brigade said::
“When the first firefighters arrived on the scene they had to walk across a weir through the pitch black to get to the island. It was extremely dark and muddy and they had to find the pump and hose at the other end of the island"
No one was injured and it is not thought anyone was on the boats at the time of the fire.
