A homeless man who stripped a friend naked during a vicious attack has been jailed for two years and three months.

Lukasz Szymczak, 28, kicked, punched and even tipped a wheelie bin onto the man during an assault that lasted more than five minutes. He also shouted at the man while pulling his clothing off, only stopping the attack when emergency services arrived.

Police and ambulance staff found the victim, who was also homeless, lying semi-conscious in a loading area off Angel Lane, Tonbridge, on the evening of 10 November 2014.

He was taken to King’s College Hospital in London where he was diagnosed with bleeding to the brain, a broken nose and multiple cuts and bruises.

Szymczak pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm and was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on Tuesday 28 April.

"This was a brutal and sustained attack in which the victim was lucky to escape with his life. Szymczak claimed in interview that despite being drunk on the evening in question, he did not assault his friend and had in fact tried to help him when he discovered him lying in a pool of his own blood. But with the help of witness testimony and CCTV footage we were able to challenge inconsistencies in his account and eventually he had little choice but to accept responsibility and plead guilty."
