Sir Ian McKellen made some fans happy when he took some time out of filming his new movie Mr Holmes while in Sussex.
He spent time with the crowd that had formed in George Street in Hailsham and they were delighted when he walked across the street to talk to them, allowed photographs to be taken, and signed autographs.
Hailsham Pavilion and parts of the Eastbourne countryside are used as backdrops for the film.
The story of the film is set in 1947 with the long-retired Holmes living in a remote Sussex farmhouse with his housekeeper and rising detective son.But then he finds himself haunted by an unsolved 50-year old case. Holmes memory isn't what it used to be, so he only remembers fragments of the case.
In the film Mr Holmes can be seen walking along the Sussex headland and in the heritage countryside surrounding Eastbourne with the dramatic white cliffs of the Seven Sisters in the background as he chats to his housekeeper's son Roger about the case that made him retire.
