Smoke seen for miles as firefighters tackle blaze at Chatham dockyard

More than forty firefighters are working to contain a blaze in a large industrial building at Chatham dockyard.

Residents have been warned to keep doors and windows closed after the alarm was raised at 3 am this morning.

Ten fire engines, as well as specialist units including a high volume pump and height vehicle, are being used to tackle the blaze, which can be seen for miles around.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus are now tackling the fire, using positive pressure ventilation fans to clear smoke.

There's no word yet on the cause of the fire.
