Medway Maritime Hospital facing major winter pressures

Winter is a time of huge pressure on the NHS.

Many patients' groups and unions say our hospitals will struggle to cope with a spike in demand.

Medway Maritime Hospital says its emergency department is busier than ever this winter - and it has been given an extra one million pounds of funding to cope.

The A&E is gearing up for its busiest time of year - and potentially unprecedented numbers of patients.

Last winter the hospital had to declare a "major alert" in January - triggered when hospitals experience severe pressures.

Like all the hospitals in Kent - latest figures show Medway Maritime is failing to meet government targets for seeing A&E patients within 4 hours.

Nationally there are claims the NHS is facing a winter crisis.

But the hospital says it has an effective patient streaming system in place. Bed blocking has been improved here.
