Hospital and ambulance services struggle to cope over New Year period

Hospitals and ambulance services across the South are still reeling from one of the busiest festive periods ever - many close to being overwhelmed with calls for help.

Over the New Year weekend South Central Ambulance, which covers much of the region, warned it could respond only to the most seriously ill patients with life-threatening conditions. At one point over the New Year period, over 20 ambulances queued outside the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.
