The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) is investigating complaints of racism at Elmley Prison on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent.

An MoJ spokesperson confirmed that allegations of misconduct have been made against staff. They would not comment on reports that eleven officers have been suspended.

“We take all allegations of misconduct extremely seriously and are investigating these claims.

“While the vast majority of our prison staff are hard-working, we will not hesitate to take action where there is evidence of misconduct and work closely with the police to make sure those responsible feel the full force of the law.

“It would be inappropriate to comment further while investigations are ongoing.”
