Firefighters in Abingdon have carried out a rather unusual rescue after a 17 year-old bellringer became tangled in bell ropes at church last night.

Crews were called to St Helens Church at 7pm yesterday and quickly realised they needed specialist equipment to help free the teenager.

40 feet

high the casualty was lowered to the floor

From 40 feet in the air the casualty had to be lowered to the floor using a rope rescue system.

He had suffered a number of injuries which he was taken to hospital for.

...all crews worked well together to achieve a successful outcome as the incident required both specialist rescue knowledge & equipment and medical expertise. Due to the steepness of the spiral staircase to the bell ringing room, there was not the option to carry the casualty out of the church on a stretcher.
