Man 54 arrested after shots fired near supermarket

Police say there is no wider threat to public safety Photo:

A 54-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder after reports that shots were fired near a supermarket in Dorset.

Officers were called to Marsh Road in Weymouth, near the ASDA supermarket, just before 6pm on Tuesday 23rd May. It is believed that the shots may have come from an air weapon. The police were also told that a number of men were seen running from the area.

Police teams - including armed officers, carried out a thorough search of the area. An investigation into what firearm was used is underway, but there have been no reports to the police of any injuries.

“We are still carrying out an extensive investigation and are determined to identify those involved, as we do believe there is still a suspect outstanding.

“We have been carrying out searches at a number of addresses in the Weymouth area and are continuing to appeal for anyone with information that can assist our investigation to contact police.”

– Detective Inspector Andrea Power, Weymouth CID, Dorset Police

Dorset Police have been reassuring the public that they do not believe there is any threat to public safety.

“I understand that residents will be concerned given the nature of this incident. However, I want to reassure the local community that we still believe there is no wider threat to members of the public and a thorough investigation is ongoing to identify those involved.

“Officers from the local neighbourhood policing team will continue to have an increased presence in the area and can be approached with any concerns.”
