Southampton make the trip to Anfield on Saturday to face a formidable Liverpool side fresh from their Champions League victory over Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain in midweek.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will be looking to make it seven wins from seven in all competitions this weekend against a Saints side who are unbeaten in their last three league and cup fixtures.
A late Roberto Firmino strike continued Liverpool’s winning start to the season against PSG, and the striker is likely to be fit again after suffering an eye problem which resulted in the Brazilian starting on the bench in midweek.
Adam Lallana (groin) is unlikely to face his former side, however, while Divock Origi (ankle) and Dejan Lovren (groin) are also set to miss out for the Reds.
Saints will have to cope without striker Danny Ings who is ineligible to play against his parent club, while fellow front man Manolo Gabbiadini (hamstring) will face a late fitness test.
Klopp’s men have kept four consecutive clean sheets against Southampton, doing the double over Saturday’s opponents last season, with current Reds forward Sadio Mane the last player to score for Saints against Liverpool in 2016.
Southampton have won just three of their 19 visits to Anfield, losing 10 and drawing six, and have already lost in Merseyside this season against Saturday’s rivals Everton.
Liverpool could win their opening six league matches for just the third time in their history with victory this weekend, doing so previously in the 1978/79 and 1990/91 seasons.
A win over Saints would also be the first time they have won their opening seven fixtures in all competitions.Southampton boss Mark Hughes has a torrid record at Anfield as a manager, losing seven of his 11 visits there, drawing the other four.
