Drivers are being advised to leave plenty of extra time or plan an alternative route, if they're planning to use the Dartford Crossing to travel from Kent to Essex today.
Maintenance crews working in the east bore of the Dartford Tunnel overnight identified some exposed metal work in the tunnel’s wall which may pose a hazard to drivers’ safety if left unchecked. The tunnel is being kept closed as a precaution while it is investigated and resolved.
It is not known yet what time the tunnel will reopen, though it is unlikely that it will be before this evening. Highways England teams are working hard to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
