Armed police are being deployed in some of the South's busiest shopping areas this festive season, in a bid to reassure shoppers that they are safe. Officers say it is a precautionary measure in a troubled world and to provide reassurance at this busy time of year. It comes as thousands of people head to Christmas markets in towns and cities including Winchester and Southampton.
In a statement Hampshire police said "We work closely with event organisers of all large scale pre-planned events to ensure the appropriate security plans are in place. We continually review these plans to make sure that we provide an appropriate and proportional police presence and that the right police resources are in place to respond to incidents should they happen."
Mary Stanley has been getting reaction from traders and shoppers.
