Arrest after bomb scare in Ramsgate

A Crawley man has been arrested after an army bomb disposal squad was called in following the discovery of suspicious items at a flat in Ramsgate.

Police were called to the property in Charlotte Court yesterday afternoon.

Roads had to be closed and nearby homes in Charlotte Court, Harbour Street, York Street and Queen Street evacuated.

Residents were moved to Ramsgate Leisure Centre - which was set up as an emergency centre - until the early hours of the morning.

A Ministry of Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team assessed the items and found there is no risk to the public.

Roads were then reopened and residents were allowed to return to their homes at around 4.20am this morning.

A 65-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of making or knowingly having control of explosives in suspicious circumstances and remains in custody.

Public safety is paramount to Kent Police and I would like to thank the public for the understanding and patience they have showed while our officers have worked with our partner agencies to ensure this situation has been dealt with in the safest way."
