Owners of a fancy dress shop in Portsmouth say they are being forced to close after 95 years of trading.

'U Need Us' on the High Street has been run by generations of the Searle family.

However they now say that current issues facing retail, including the rise in online shopping, means that they will be shutting their doors.

Comments have flooded in on the shop's Facebook page

U Need Us opened in Portsmouth in 1923 and has been run by the Searle family ever since.

It was founded by the grandfather of the current owner Steve who started working at the shop 35 years ago.

The shop has been at its current site on Arundel Street since the 1960s.

The shop sells all things fancy dress, from wigs to practical jokes.

The shop has been in operation for decades, moving in the 1960s to its current site

The “Searle Family” are very proud to have played a part in the history of our wonderful city and also in the lives of the fantastic people of Portsmouth over such a long period of time. We have so many memories of smiles we’ve generated, the happy times we have played a part in creating and customers who’ve become friends, sadly things change and nothing lasts forever."

Shoppers have been expressing their sadness and shock over the shop's news.

U Need Us will be closing in the next couple of weeks.

In the meantime, a sale of all the shop's stock has begun.
